About: This series was a result of a collaboration between me and another artist Lisa Imperiale. We both participated in a three-day artist event called Art in the Open hosted by the Center for Emerging Visual Artists in the spring of 2022. We were then invited to exhibit artwork inspired by the AiO event for an exhibition called Nature’s Alchemy at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education.

This project really culminated over the course of a year of work and resulted in a series of woodblock prints, a collaborative sculpture and an interactive outdoor installation piece.

The woodblock prints, my contribution in the gallery exhibition, were created from graphite rubbings off the historic metals’ plaques located on the rocky beach below the Fairmount Waterworks on the Schuylkill River. These images on these plaques contained old industrial schematics of Waterworks, the Schuylkill River, and the types of fish that lived in the river. I created a combined drawing from all the rubbings then carved and printed these compositions from carved woodblocks onto Japanese paper.
