About: This series of prints consist of fragments of urban landscapes layered together and inverted. These fragments are in the form of silhouettes and depict skylines, bridges, and old industrial structures specific to Philadelphia and NYC. These prints are done in the relief technique known as multiple block printing. This technique originates in 17th century Japan; the Japanese developed a system of printing where each color in the image was carved and printed from separate blocks. For these prints, I am also using separate blocks for each color. Once I carve a woodblock, I often use the block again in different combinations and add effects such as color blends and transparency in my ink. The Riverways series was inspired by photos taken on several boat trips up the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers in the Philadelphia area.
